Tariff classification compliance becomes increasingly important for importers due to the emphasis on compliance by customs authorities and increasing needs for harmonization within multi-country company structures. This becomes especially difficult with large volumes of imports with many different tariff classifications. Tracon has assisted some major corporations in the development of systems to classify goods and in the maintenance of the integrity of the data. In addition, we advise Canadian companies and their affiliates located in different countries with harmonization of tariff classifications for consistency or with support for varying classifications between countries. This also affects origin determination for FTA purposes as the rule is linked to tariff classification and therefore it is the classification in the importing country that determines how goods must be certified for preferential tariff treatment.
